Market Drayton
Market Drayton is part of North East Shropshire Branch made up of Market Drayton, Whitchurch, Wem and Shawbury, and surrounding villages. Party members are able to attend meetings, usually held on the first Friday of the month, at the Beacon Community Centre in Market Drayton itself. The Branch Secretary is Penny Cartwright.

These are just some of the ways in which Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership is described by new members of the North East Shropshire Branch Labour Party.
The dramatic rise in the number of people joining the Labour Party, which started over a year ago is still continuing with 85 new members in North Shropshire between the announcement of the General Election at the beginning of May and the end of June 2017. This brings the total membership in the North Shropshire Constituency to 630. Of these new members, 39 are in the Market Drayton, Wem, Whitchurch and Shawbury Branch which now has a membership of 260. Following the 2015 election, our Branch membership was 75 and has risen by 220% in two years with a 290% increase in membership in the Constituency.
A YouGov poll of Labour voters conducted in June found that 28% backed the party because of its manifesto and 13% specifically because of Jeremy Corbyn. These results are reflected by new members in the Market Drayton and Area Branch most of whom are very dissatisfied with the Tory policies which are felt to be unfair in the extreme and targeted against the most vulnerable in society. Particular concerns highlighted are the crisis in teaching, the damage caused by the Government to our health services and benefit cuts / low wages that are driving an increase in the use of local food banks. On a positive note, new members have welcomed the return to traditional Labour values and a leader who is honest and genuinely cares for people.
